49ers see ‘no scenario’ where Jimmy Garoppolo returns in 2023, says Kyle Shanahan

San Francisco coach Kyle Shanahan said he didn’t see “any scenario” that would have him as the quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo back with 49ers next season. Here’s what you need to know:

  • Shanahan said Wednesday that the team is “enough satisfied” with the quarterbacks Tri Lance And Brooke Purdyboth of whom are recovering from season-ending injuries.
  • “I know we have two rookies on our team right now and I think we can win them both,” Shanahan said.
  • Garoppolo has played for the 49ers since he was traded before Patriots in 2017. Helped guide San Francisco to a Super Bowl appearance LIV vs Kansas City.
  • Purdy, the last pick in last year’s NFL Draft, was 7-0 as a starter before losing the NFC Championship game last Sunday in Philadelphia. Lance was the #3 pick in the 2021 NFL Draft.

the background

The 49ers entered the 2022 season expecting Lance to be the team’s starter and expected to transfer from Garoppolo. However, the veteran remained with the team and ended up starting 12 games with San Francisco after Lance’s season-ending injury in Week 2.

Garoppolo led the team to an 8-4 record that season and threw for 2,437 yards with a 67.2 percent completion rate and 16 touchdowns before suffering a foot injury that ultimately ended his season. Purdy, a seventh-inning rookie, started the remainder of the 49ers’ games undefeated until he suffered a torn UCL in his throwing elbow against the Eagles in the NFC Championship.

Garoppolo is set to become a free agent in March.

Does this plan make sense?

The plan makes sense in that the 49ers closed out their most recent training camp with Lance and Purdy as their 1 and 2 quarterbacks and ended up deep in the playoffs. Of course, Garoppolo was added to the mix shortly thereafter, and the 49ers would likely bring in a veteran quarterback, though not Garoppolo, during free agency. However, the team believes in the abilities of their young quarterbacks, especially Purdy whose only loss as a starter came on Sunday, a game in which he suffered a serious injury in the opening series. – wheelbarrows

Is Lance supposed to start the season?

Lance should be the No. 1 quarterback in the spring because he will be completely cleared for training while Purdy is likely just starting his rehab. But if Purdy is cleared from training camp as expected, he’ll either be the starter or the team will split first-team repeats between him and Lance. And honestly, Lance needs more on repeat than Byrdie. Although Lance entered NFL A year ago, Purdy attempted nearly five times as many college pitches and hit more than twice the amount of Lance in the NFL. – wheelbarrows

Why are they so confident of relatively unproven players?

Given their larger roster-building philosophy, the 49ers may not have another realistic option. This team has amassed and pushed a great deal of star power in recent years and more big names – namely Nick Bosa – in line for payday. The path chosen for the 49ers to preserve a deep roster is by saving money at the quarterback position. And the fact that both Lance and Purdy operate junior deals does that, even if it does so with the obvious risk of these players being relatively unproven commodities.

Getting any QB to clearly outpace Purdy and/or Lance in the selecting order would almost certainly be costly to the point of derailing the 49ers’ larger cost structure. That’s why Lynch and Shanahan talked about filling the hall with a quarterback who fit the team’s salary cap requirements. Not likely to be an upper class name.

In the end, it comes down to this: The 49ers spent a massive amount of venture capital to acquire Lance. Usually, such an investment requires a positive return for the franchise to sustain success at a high level. The 49ers may have backed a really good insurance plan with Purdy, but at some point they’re going to have to work with the 49ers on the roster. – Lombardy

Possible landing sites for Garoppolo?

There are many. He has a Patriots connection with Raider coach Josh McDaniel and is very familiar Planes Coach Robert Saleh as well. Both could shop for starting quarterback. Then there are the Texans, who may end up being the favorites in the Garoppolo Lottery. New head coach DeMeco Ryans knows Garoppolo well and is interested in hiring the 49ers passing game coordinator, Bobby Slowik, to manage his offense. If that happens, Slowik and Garoppolo will be able to hit the ground running when the OTAs start in the spring. Garoppolo came close to fully clearing up after injuring his foot in December. – wheelbarrows
