CPR was performed to Hamlin on the field Monday night for several minutes after he collapsed after being tackled by Bengals wide receiver T Higgins. Hamlin received oxygen, according to the ESPN broadcast, as he was placed in the ambulance and taken from the field. He was taken to the hospital, where he remained.

Dr. William Knight credited the rapid medical response with saving Hamlin’s life. There is no definite answer as to what caused Hamelin’s heart to stop.

“It’s been a long, hard road these past three days,” Knight said. “…he has made a significant improvement.”

Britts said the neurological signs of improvement began Wednesday night when Hamlin gradually woke up, with the rest of his body healing. Doctors said it was too early to know how Hamlin was acting emotionally, in part because he remains on a ventilator.

“When we talk about neurologically intact, that’s an umbrella term for large motor movements and following commands,” Knight said. “When we talk about the subtle things that make us human — cognition, emotion, speech, language, etc. — we look forward to learning more about that soon.”

Doctors said that in order for Hamelin to be upgraded from a critical condition to a stable condition, he would need to be taken off the breathing tube and show improved neurological and respiratory functions.
