Growing up, I ran cross-country and cross-track in middle school and high school but didn’t take it seriously. I started running more and more in college and completed my first studies half marathonThe Okoboji Half Marathon, in 2011. but me started running more for everyone wrong – wrong – wrong reasons. I felt that to be a good, serious runner, I had to lose weight and look a certain way. Today though, I’m running for better reasons and I know you don’t need to look a certain way to be a runner.

for me The first marathon (Twin Cities Marathon), I convinced my friend (now my husband) to run it with me. We had no idea what we were doing. I remember being confused as to why the gels were dispensed at mile 17. I didn’t even realize you had to fuel during a marathon, but I only took it because everyone else did. I look back and laugh at this moment because I’m teaching runners Not I make the same mistakes I did.

But since it got real about my journey, a lot of people have told me they appreciate my story because it shows that even if you don’t always filter for the right reasons, it doesn’t have to be that way forever.

I used to feel, as a dietitian who works with runners, that no one would want to work with me if they knew I was struggling. disordered eating like that.

I spent years laying my body on the floor during this fuel shortage. It didn’t happen overnight, but I found myself tired of keeping track of everything in MyFitnessPal and stressing over every little thing I ate. I realized that things I thought were normal – like existence weight for days after a the long term—It all has to do with how I nourish my body.

When I started to properly nourish my body both on and off the run, I saw significant improvements in my running times. She ran an 18-minute PR at the California International Marathon in 2017, and much of that success was just a fitting boost.

I am now concentrating on helping other runners fuel their bodies to run strong. I hope my story is inspiring to other runners because many runners have been dieting at some point in their lives. I have many clients who reach out and feel they need to lose weight, but also want to improve performance. I talk a lot about how these two things don’t go hand in hand. I would ask potential clients who want to lose weight, but also want to run hard: What’s more important? Do you prefer to lose weight or do you prefer it improve the performanceEven if it means you haven’t lost weight or haven’t lost it as quickly as you hoped?

Focusing on weight loss often means restriction—something I learned firsthand. Restriction commonly results in a decrease in performance. I just want to help runners perform well and feel their best, both on and off-road.

Currently, I run five days a week. I completed my first post 50K Ultra Trail, Copper Pass, this year and I can’t wait to run another one. Ultra racing had a different feeling than any road a race I’ve made it before, and I loved it. I said I would never race a 100 mile race, but after helping a few clients get ready for their race, it makes distance: after It looks more attractive.

Running taught me how strong I can be you have brought me so much joy. I managed to run over 1,000 miles while I was pregnant With my son and now he’s got to share countless miles with him on trolley. Sometimes running is my time, but it’s so special when I can share it with him. Even after a not-so-great run, I feel better than I did before I went for a run.

I want other runners to know that it’s very common to turn to running as a way to lose weight, but to know that even though you’ve found running that way, you can (and should) keep running for other reasons. Running can bring a lot into your life: stress reliefA sense of accomplishment, friendship and a sense of belonging to the community. If you are looking to start running, think about why that is, and what you hope running will bring into your life.


These three tips made my running journey a success:

1. Listen to your hunger
