The White House says it wants to make the process for applying for student loan forgiveness as easy and seamless as possible by using borrowers’ Social Security numbers to verify income. However, it is estimated 5 million borrowers will have to submit additional documentssuch as a 1040, a tax copy, or proof of non-filing in order to verify their income.

How do I know if my student loans qualify for forgiveness?

Federal Student Loans Only held by the US government are eligible for Biden’s Tolerance Scheme.

Here is a complete list of eligible student loans for forgiveness:

  • direct loans
  • Parental Loans Plus
  • Direct PLUS loans are given to graduate and professional students
  • Consolidation loans (with core loans held by the Ministry of Education that were disbursed on or before 30 June 2022)
  • FFEL loans held by the Ministry of Education
  • Perkins loans held by the Department of Education
  • Non-performing loans (including Department of Education backed or commercially backed Stafford, Unsubsidized Stafford, Parent PLUS, Graduate PLUS Loans, and Department of Education Perkins Loans)

The easiest way to check if you have an eligible student loan for forgiveness is to log on to and click View Details. Your loan type will be above the green circle that shows your student loan balance.

In addition, you can check your student loan service. If your student loan provider is Nelnet, MOHELA, or one of the federal student loan providers listed below, your student loans qualify for forgiveness.

If your loans are managed by services not listed above, they are privately owned and do not qualify for tolerance.

How do I know how much forgiveness I qualify for?

If you meet the income requirements of $125,000 or less annually for individuals, $250,000 or less annually for spouses who file their taxes together, and you have a qualifying loan type, you qualify for $10,000 in student loan forgiveness.

If you receive a Pell Grant, you are eligible for $20,000 in student loan forgiveness. Pell Scholarships are federal scholarships awarded to students with exceptional financial need. To check whether or not you have received a Pell Grant, log on to to view your student loan details.
