After establishing maintenance business a few years ago, VR FleetCare It has successfully started implementing its growth strategy. Growth is pursued through other rail traffic and in neighboring regions, covering all of Northern Europe.

Peter Guldbrand, Vice President, Commercial at VR FleetCare says:

“Our Finnish roots taught us to live frugally during the company’s early days. This has enabled us to build a unique experience in extending the life cycle of rolling stock and components. We also specialize in repairing components that have been overlooked by others. By doing so, we operate in line with With our values, we harness the circular economy as part of our operations.

“There are also other advantages to being Finnish: we have a very wide range of competencies and a high level of safety in working life, which results in highly committed employees. Finns are also known for their reliability. We keep our word and do things exactly as agreed.”

Operators and fleet owners face new challenges

Climate change is driving global action, while urbanization increases the need for public transportation. This will increase the popularity of rail transport in the future. What does this mean for operators?

In the near future, all rail companies, operators and fleet owners will need to think carefully about how to respond to the growing popularity of rail transport. Buying new rolling stock involves long processes, and short-term solutions are needed. All existing rail equipment must be used, and many operators are considering ways to extend the life cycle of their fleet.

Guldbrand says:

“Fleet modernization and retrofitting projects are our bread and butter, and we solve all of our customers’ challenges according to their wishes. We also have a very strong partnership network. The same subcontractors are used to build cruise ships and to equip trains and wagons.”

agile operations

When a company’s production processes are sound, its location does not matter much. For two decades now, VR FleetCare has applied the lean methodology in its production processes, which is also known as the principle of continuous improvement. This has enabled it to standardize the quality and efficiency of its production. As a medium-sized organization, the company is also resilient, and this may not always be the case for large organizations.

The agility of VR FleetCare is also demonstrated by the speed with which the organization prepared for a new field of production: the manufacture of freight wagons. Existing product lines can be modified to support production of smaller batches of vehicles.

Guldbrand notes:

“Due to the Russian war against Ukraine, our customers in Finland and other Nordic countries need rail cars to service freight traffic, as Russian railways previously used for freight operations have ceased to function, and some rail car manufacturers have become the subject of sanctions. Under these circumstances, we realized we had the design and production capabilities needed to manufacture small batches of rail cars in response to the changing needs of our customers. We are now in discussions with several customers, but we still have the potential for more.”

Digitalization trend is getting stronger in railway fleet maintenance

Success in the international market of rail fleet maintenance requires not only a high level of competence, but also a touch of creativity and courage to do things in new ways.

Goldbrand concludes:

“In the manufacturing industry, maintenance operations have been built on a digital basis for a long time now.

“The development of cloud services and computing power, lower prices and examples from other industries has finally brought digital services to rail fleet maintenance as well. The VR FleetCare solution is an in-house development team for SmartCare digital services, made up of experts in many different fields. We also produce These services are for the maintenance of the railway infrastructure.
