On a diet? How does this work for you.. – Talk to Tania

The majority of people who come to me for nutritional advice say one of two things – they think they eat healthy and know what to do, but they don’t.

First, just because we know, doesn’t automatically mean we will. Our thoughts dictate our actions and the people I work with are often beaten and frustrated by the number of disappointing diet experiences, and start buying the lie that they will never be able to reach their health goals.

Second, there is a clear difference between healthy eating and balanced eating. You can certainly make healthy food choices, but if you don’t know how to eat them properly — in the right combinations, the right amounts, and the right frequencies — even healthy food can raise your blood sugar and cause your body to store fat.

If you’ve been following me for any length of time, you’ll see something about the importance of stabilizing your blood sugar. Balanced blood sugar is very important. So important, in fact, that this is how our bodies were created to function.

Newborns are screened for stable blood sugar levels before leaving the hospital. Babies naturally maintain this stability. Anyone who has had children knows that an infant or toddler gets hungry as soon as they wake up.

Babies get breast milk or formula, which is the perfect balance of protein, fats and carbohydrates together to stabilize blood sugar. Not much changes as it grows, either.

Once the kids start eating solid food, God forbid, you should leave the house with a toddler and not bring a snack, am I right? This is the blood sugar drops. They become “hungry” and start bugging you for a snack.

This same process happens in our adult bodies, but in our busy world and with all those diets in our minds that say “don’t eat that” or even “don’t eat if you want to lose that weight” we absorb it and ignore those cues to eat.

Our bodies haven’t changed much than they did when we were kids in the way we eat and do food, we’ve become much bigger human beings. And the older we get, the crazier our eating habits get.

No fat, cut carbs, count calories, don’t eat in the evening, don’t eat in the morning, eat three meals a day and don’t snack, eat five meals a day, and yes, snack — a constant barrage of overinformation about Bad information, quite frankly, leaves the majority of our population either on a diet train they don’t seem to get off of, or very confused because they don’t do anything.

How does this work for you? I’d venture it’s safe to say, it isn’t. Nearly 30 percent of adults in Canada are obese and more than 31 percent of children between the ages of 12 and 17 are obese. (The 2012-2013 numbers were the most recent data I could find on childhood obesity.)

Obviously, diets don’t work and certainly nothing. What works is stabilizes blood sugar.

Stabilizing blood sugar works on every body. It’s how we got into this world, and the sooner we get back into it, the sooner we’ll see things start to change. But diets don’t teach you that because the dieting industry is a billion dollar industry and if you find something that works for you, your spouse, and your kids anywhere and in any situation, you’ll never go back to dieting. That wouldn’t be good for their bottom line.

Instead of depriving yourself, restricting foods, counting calories, or eliminating entire food groups, why not learn to eat the foods you love in a way that creates hormonal balance, stabilizes blood sugar, stimulates metabolism, and puts your body where it releases Naturally stored fat, protects lean muscle, increases energy, and staves off cravings?

You will create a healthy inflammatory response – inflammation is the root cause of all diseases by the way – reduce the risk of metabolic diseases such as diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, stroke, heart disease, stroke and you will create health in your body because your body naturally releases weight.

It’s really simple. Eating foods in the right combinations, in the right amounts, and at the right frequency throughout the day will do the trick.

One thing to remember, it’s not a diet. This means that results will not usually occur overnight. But they will happen, and in a healthy way.

Wherever you are on your health journey, it will not happen overnight and it may take some time for these effects to reverse. The amount of time usually depends on how long your body has been in a state of deprivation and imbalance.

What I do know is that it’s less about your age and more about the length of time you’ve been doing/not doing things that serve your health and your body.
