Planet Planet’s founding mission is to use space to help life on Earth, and we’re excited to achieve that goal by announcing our acquisition of Salo Sciences! Salo is a climate technology company that builds advanced forest observation systems to measure the Earth’s ever-changing ecosystems using artificial intelligence and multi-sensor Earth observation data. Planet plans to leverage Salo’s technologies to further develop our planetary variability offerings and help customers globally identify and verify carbon stocks, monitor forest change, and mitigate climate risks.
Monitoring carbon stocks and emissions is critical to mitigating climate change, providing insight and accountability into the effectiveness of carbon reduction strategies such as planting trees and avoiding deforestation. We anticipate that the high-resolution insights provided by Salo’s technologies will also be essential to addressing a number of challenges in the supply chain and monitoring sustainable land use, reinforcing the action plan it already supports in these areas. Leading partners and customers around the world power Planet data products and services in the following ways:
Planet is constantly bridging the gap between complex remote sensing science and real-world solutions. Incorporating Salo’s techniques into our collection of images and techniques will help build an understanding of environmental changes at the level of individual trees. By adding Forest Carbon to its catalog of planetary variables, including soil water content, surface temperature and biomass data, Planet aims to expand its offerings of data ready for global analysis.
In addition to mapping forest carbon, Salo brings technologies and expertise in mapping patterns of forest structure, wildfire risk, and biodiversity change around the world. Their products provide information to electrical utilities by mapping where overhanging trees might collide with power lines, to fire agencies working to mitigate the risk of catastrophic wildfires, and to land managers like the US Forest Service, who use Forest Observatory data to identify shifts in species habitats that result from that. from disturbances such as logging, forest fires, and climate change.
By joining together as a team, we aim to enable our clients to account for the important services forests provide, and work to change economic incentives around land use to meet global climate and sustainability goals. We view Salo’s techniques as an essential tool for the sustainable transition of the global economy and a pivotal tool needed to expand and enable systematic measurements of critical data.
