Navy and diversity leaders will visit the G. School such as Nuclear Engineering, Cryptology, Information Technology and Healthcare. The Navy will also share information about its $180,000 ROTC Scholarship Program, which pays full college tuition to students with exceptional academic and leadership qualifications. The main attraction will be Nimitz, a mobile, cutting-edge virtual reality experience that simulates an actual high-speed SEAL mission. Video preview of Nimitz.
“We are very excited to be spending time in South Florida, meeting with exceptional high school students and faculty, and discussing the great opportunities available in the Navy,” says LCDR Claudia Allday, with Navy Diversity and Outreach. “It is important for today’s students to understand that the Navy STEM profession offers an exceptional future.”
In addition to events at G. Holmes Braddock and Coral Glades High Schools, the Nimitz Virtual Reality Experience will also be on display at the Coral Gables Arts Festival on Saturday and Sunday, January 28-29. Please see details below.
Nimitz virtual reality experience
So what exactly is going on inside Nimitz’s 18-Wheel Portable Virtual Reality Experience? Participants briefly go through the video before strapping on an Oculus Rift headset and a piece of wearable technology called the SubPac (traditionally used by club DJs) that beats in real time the sounds of the task. Mission participants navigate using a sophisticated steering wheel and throttle system that replicates the actual feel of experiencing a Navy high-speed SWCC boat while extracting seals. Once completed, participants go to the debriefing station, where they receive feedback and a performance score.
