Tom Brady says he used therapy to treat his mental health

Brady said Monday that the importance of addressing one’s mental health in sport is often underestimated.

“I think there was a part of us where we felt absorbed and dealt with,” Brady added. “And I think you realize that there is so much more, especially in our day and age, with the speed with which things happen in life for all of us, and the amount of responsibilities that fall upon us.

“You hear this a lot from people who say, ‘I’m only human.’ We’re only human. We’re not non-human. We’re not immune to a lot of the things life brings us. We’re not robots.”

Brady said that having a “terrific support system” helped him weather the pressure he was put on during his career, during which he won seven Super Bowl titles.

“You wake up every day trying to do the best you can, and you understand that life has its stress and you deal with it with a wonderful support system and you understand and you have some introspection in your life where you can look at yourself and say, Where do I need to devote my time and energy?” he explained .

“And how can I relieve some of the stress and reduce the burden on me so that I can be good to the people around me? These are all different things to work on. I worked with them when I was 20.

“There were a lot of things I went through when I was 20. There were a lot of things I went through in my 30s. There were things I went through in my 40s.

“And that is life. And you learn to grow up and learn to deal with life. And that’s what we all try to do. We try to do it in the best way we can.”
